Marietta Sets PVCC’s Longest Table for Lunch in Plum’s Garden

  • Piedmont Virginia Community College 501 College Drive Charlottesville, VA 22902 (map)

A hilltop in bloom provides a lovely springtime vista for tasty food and good conversation.  Diners will discuss the community college setting and how to assure a sense of home for all involved in the beauty of learning.  Relationships create an awareness of belonging.  Returning to her grandmother Plum’s memorial Garden at the place where she taught for twenty-eight years, Marietta joins President Jean Runyon and college administrative assistants for a celebration of home based on their reading of Leaving 1203.  Why is it vital for everyone in education to make their workplaces feel like home—for themselves, for co-workers, and so importantly for students?  Marietta returns home whenever she tends Plum’s Garden, just as she was at home in her office, in the hallways, and in the classrooms at PVCC.  Participants will read her farewell letter to the college community and hear about Marietta’s unforgettable drive home after she taught her last class in May, 2010.
