This event will be rescheduled. Look for a new date in the coming months. Peace.
10-12: What a Saturday jamboree in Morehead City! In the morning, she will introduce attendees to her book and focus on one particular chapter in Leaving 1203—her dad’s messenger bag from World War II. She will showcase Lt. McCarty’s bag, discovered during her home emptying, and display some of its contents—a photograph from inside his rescue plane, his “aerial compass”—and share her intimate understanding of the war that could have been learned from her dad only in this way. Marietta will arrive at 9:30 for casual conversation and a sneak preview for early birds of the contents of the messenger bag. After a surely robust discussion with her, Museum Curator Steve Anderson will present historical objects that also have a story to tell. Admission for the morning is free for members and $3.00 for non. Signed copies of Leaving 1203 will be available for purchase and personalizing.
Whether you are attending both sessions (why not!) or only one, please call the History Museum to reserve your place: 252-247-7533. If you’re attending both, there are nearby eateries for lunch.
1:30-3:30: Marietta serves up a writing workshop dedicated to the power of objects to whisper a story and convey deep meaning, just as the messenger bag spoke volumes to her. Participants should bring a significant object, one that especially touches your hearts, as well as your choice of pen and paper, laptop or iPad, pencil and papyrus. After exercising creative juices with Marietta’s guidance, each of you will spend time writing about that special thimble or walking stick or hourglass. To conclude the afternoon, everyone will present their prized possession to the group. Afterward, bring on the mixing and mingling! Marietta will stay until 4 and examine each of your treasures. Feel free to browse the Museum as well. The cost for the writing workshop of $20.00 includes a copy of Leaving 1203.
